The DU alum took over Denver Public Schools' Bruce Randolph School back in 2005 when it was one of the worst schools in the state. This past May, 73 seniors accepted their diplomas at their graduation ceremony at DU's Magness Arena. That day nearly 97 precent of the seniors graduated as compared to the 76.9 precent district average.
If you're still not convinced that she's a hero you should read all of Richard Chapman's wonderful feature in the fall addition of the University of Denver Magazine.
I completed the assignment for the quarterly alumni magazine back in June and the latest addition just came came out. It's always a pleasure to work with them especially since I'm an alum myself.
Kristin was an absolute joy to work with and in the short time I spent with her I could understand why she was able to turn things around at Bruce Randolph. She has a no non-sense approach but at the same time has an overwhelmingly positive impact on her students. I can tell she's a popular figure because when I was scouting locations at a few different schools everyone knew who she was and had nothing but outstanding things to say about her.
We did most of the shooting at South High School because we were looking for the feel of an old classroom but we also packed up the gear and made it over to Bruce Randolph for a photo with some of her former students.
Everything really came together in this assignment and that's all you can ever ask for.
