"Shattered glass from the victim's minivan covers the ground following a shooting outside of La Sierra night club in Aurora, Colo. at approximately 1:50 am on May 11, 2008. Aurora Police could not provide any additional information at the time."
Internet woes here at home have prevented me from posting any earlier.
I was working on my website, which is nearly complete, tonight when I saw a slew of police and fire vehicles racing down my street. I reacted just like a journalist and grabbed my keys, gear and raced out the door to follow them. Getting images from spot news events requires either a police scanner, which I don't have, or some luck. I just happen to live on the same street as the District 1 Aurora Police Station so I see the cops racing down the street all the time but it's a rarity to see 10 of them fly by in a row.
I got down to the scene, which is about a mile and a half from my house, with just enough time to make a mediocre image of the paramedics loading a victim onto a stretcher and into the ambulance. I worked the scene quickly to make a few other interesting and informative images. Although it was a somewhat stale image I did manage to shoot the pool of blood that had collected outside the vehicle on the passenger side. I hung around for about 45 minutes before the cold weather forced me back home. I only had shorts and a wind breaker on since I was working in the house.
I have a busy day ahead of me which includes Mother's Day activities and assisting Los Angeles based Italian photographer Manuello Paganelli with a shoot here in Denver. I will also be working with him Monday in Colorado Springs at the Olympic training center. I can't wait to practice some of my Italian!
