"When asked to define herself in one word, University of Denver student Chisom Agbim responded with 'passionate' and evoked that feeling in her pose in the Johnston & McFarland dormitory classroom in Denver on May 15, 2008."
This evening I finally got my act together and shot some images for my independent study that will complete the requirements for my art minor. The project I'm working on right now is portraits of people of color at DU. The University has an issue with diversity and although they claim that they are working on the problem, it still exists. I want to call attention to the subject through my art. As part of the project I am asking students of color to define themselves in one word and then evoke that feeling in their pose. The goal is to demonstrate that skin color, nationality, race, gender or sexual orientation does not define a person, it only represents a small piece of who they really are. It was really interesting to read what word each of the ten students I photographed tonight picked to define themselves.
I am shooting high school state championships four out of the next five days so I will have to put my project on hold until next Wednesday but I look forward to working on the project some more. I will be in Pueblo, ughhh, Friday and Saturday and I pray that my hotel has free wireless internet so that I don't have to go searching for somewhere to post each night.
