NHL: Canucks at Avalanche

"Colorado Avalanche defenseman Kyle Quincey (27) skates during introductions prior to taking on the Vancouver Canucks at the Pepsi Center in Denver, Colorado on Tuesday, March 9, 2010."

Monday night was a tough battle for first place in the NHL's Northwest division. Unfortunately, the Avalanche couldn't hold on to a 3-0 first period lead and ended up falling to division leading Vancouver 6-4.

I tried a few different things Tuesday night and learned a little bit in the process. Inspired by Strazz's image I played around at 1/6th of a second during the introductions. I don't know that I'm particularly happy with the result but at least I'm on to something that I can try again at next Wednesday's game.

I also forced myself to shoot with a 300 and 1.4x converter through the glass giving me an equivalent 420mm f/4 lens. For most sports this isn't much of an issue and is something that I do all the time but shooting hockey at the Pepsi Center is much different.

Unlike many pro hockey venues there are not holes in the glass for photographers to put their lenses through. Instead we have to shoot through the thick plexiglass which can be challenging to get sharp images at times, especially with longer lenses. I don't know why that is but I think it has something to do with the optics and angle of view in the longer lenses having more trouble with the plexiglass than wider lenses. The sixth image above was shot with this setup and all things considered I'm pretty happy with the result.

I also went back down to the ice for the third period which turned out to be a good decision as Vancouver came back in the final minutes to take the lead and I got an image of Canucks right wing Jannik Hansen celebrating his game winning goal.

I took Mike's Nikon D3 to the game and used it alongside my Canon 1D Mark II's. Can you tell which images are which?
