"Calgary Flames right wing Jamal Mayers (19) and Colorado Avalanche defenseman Ryan Wilson (44) fight in the first period at the Pepsi Center in Denver, Colorado on Wednesday, March 17, 2010. The Flames won 3-2."
Now that's a fight picture that will be tough for me to top. The crazy part is that Mayers, who looks like he's taking a beating here, survived that hit and ended up knocking Wilson HARD to the ice (I got blocked by a ref). One of the ushers standing next to me leaned over and said, "Yup, he's going to need the smelling salts after that one."
My green attire must have brought me luck, either that or karma was on my side, because every other fight this year has happened on the other end of the ice from my shooting position. I say it all the time, great sports photographs require being in the right place, at the right time, with the right lens, a little preparation/anticipation and oh yea, luck. Everything just fell into place for this image and I'm glad it did.
Evident from the first image and others, it was a battle for three periods. The Avs couldn't seem to find the back of the net but Flames goalie Vesa Toskala played a near flawless game making some spectacular saves including a double pad stack that went away from me. He also stoned Avalanche center Chris Durno from point blank range in the sixth image above.
I enjoyed hockey last night and I hope that I get a few more games in the playoffs but for now I'm really glad it's March Madness. I'll take 'Cuse over the dudes from Morgantown in the final. Did you remember to fill out your bracket?
